Technology

In Technology and Design, pupils at Clounagh Junior High School have opportunities to explore a range of topics and develop Whole Curriculum Skills and Capabilities. Pupils learn about:

  • Design

  • Communication

  • Manufacturing

  • Control.

Technology and Design encourages our pupils to develop creative thinking and problem-solving skills by evaluating design proposals and selecting and using materials that are fit for purpose.

Pupils have opportunities to research and manage information effectively to investigate design issues. Teachers within the department encourage pupils to think critically and flexibly and demonstrate creativity and initiative when developing ideas and following them through. Pupils learn a variety of relevant skills that will equip them for life in a technological society.

At the end of the autumn and summer terms pupils are assessed by means of an exam (50%) and coursework (50%).

The aims of our department are:

  • to develop technology and design capability commensurate with each pupil’s ability.

  • to develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world,

  • to build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality products for a wide range of users,

  • to stimulate the development of a range of communication skills which are central to the design process,

  • to critique, evaluate and test ideas and products and the work of others.
