Special Educational Needs Provision at Clounagh
At Clounagh, we are committed to ensuring that all pupils, including those with Special Educational Needs (SEN), have access to a high-quality education that is inclusive, equitable, and tailored to meet their individual needs. Our approach is guided by the principles set out in the Code of Practice on the Identification and Assessment of SEN, the Supplement to the Code of Practice, and the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act (NI) 2016.
Inclusive Practice in Mainstream Education
In line with DENI guidance, pupils with learning difficulties may be placed in smaller class settings where appropriate. These classes offer a differentiated curriculum designed to support individual learning profiles. Placement is flexible and reviewed regularly, allowing pupils to transition between bands based on progress and need.
Pupils in these settings may also access External Support Agencies provided by the Education Authority (EA), tailored to their specific developmental, educational, or behavioural needs.
Identification and Assessment
All Year 8 pupils undergo Baseline Assessments in Literacy and Numeracy (PTE and PTM), within their first month. These assessments help identify pupils who may require additional support and inform differentiated teaching strategies.
Further Standardised Testing is conducted in Year 9 to monitor progress and determine whether continued or enhanced support is necessary.
SEN Support Framework
Clounagh operates a Three-Stage SEN Support Model, consistent with the Code of Practice:
-
Stage 1: School-based support and monitoring.
-
Stage 2: Enhanced school-based support with external advice.
-
Stage 3: Statutory assessment and potential development of a Statement of SEN.
We actively involve parents/carers in the development and review of Individual Education Plans (IEPs), soon to be replaced by Personal Learning Plans (PLPs) as per the 2016 Act. These plans are designed collaboratively to ensure that provision is responsive and child-centred.
Accessibility and Physical Inclusion
Clounagh is committed to physical accessibility for all pupils. The school premises include:
-
Ramp access at all entrances/exits
-
An 8-person key-operated lift
-
Fully equipped accessible toilets and changing facilities in the PE department
Provision of Classroom Assistance is determined by the Education Authority based on assessed need.
Policy and Governance
Our SEN provision is underpinned by current legislation including:
-
The Education (NI) Order 1996
-
The Special Educational Needs and Disability (NI) Order 2005 (SENDO)
-
The Special Educational Needs and Disability Act (NI) 2016
