"Wear a Christmas Hat Day" for Alzheimer's Society
|
|
Staff and pupils of Clounagh raised £2,000 in aid of the Alzheimer's Society in a "Wear a Christmas Hat Day."
The event was organised by three Year 10 pupils, Kirsty, Demi-Leigh and Zoe (pictured holding the cheque along with a representative of the charity).
It was a resounding success.
A number of Christmas hats were kindly donated by Andrew White, Community Champion for Tesco Craigavon (on left). The sale of these hats, along
with the individual sponsorship of pupils, saw an impressive sum being raised for this worthwile charity. (Also in the photo are some of the top fundraisers,

Charity fundraising
|
|
Following the visit of former pupils Capt. Matthew Stevens earlier in the year, the Year 10 form teachers and pupils decuded to try
and raise money for the Help for Heroes charity (Capt. Stevens related stories of his tour of duty to Afghanistan).
A recent fun day for Year 10's included a sponsored walk for the charity appeal, a movie, quiz, and leavers' lunch.
A magnificent £2,500 was raised, with eight pupils raising more than £50 each. They were given JJB Sports vouchers in recognition of their efforts.
Capt. Stevens' father, Paul (a school governor), came in to accept the cheque on behalf of Matthew and the charity.
Other recent charity fundraising included a bun sale and a "name the bear" competition.

Drama workshop
|
|
Recently a group of pupils from Clounagh Junior High School participated in a drama
workshop as part of the ARTitude Festival.
The ARTitude Festival is an important part of
the work of ADAPT NI. They provide subsidized participatory workshops in animation, arts
and crafts, drama, media and script development. These provided an opportunity for young
people of all abilities to explore the core values of disability inclusion, equality and
diversity through the theme: “Me and My Friend”. Participants will use the arts to show
how individuals, whether they have a disability or not, are similar yet uniquely different,
and how diversity and individuality in themselves and others should be valued and encouraged. Participants will gain confidence in communicating ideas through the arts, develop their skills and boost imagination.

Clounagh pupils win UK film competition
|
|
In December 2010, three pupils from Clounagh Junior High School's filmmaking club (left to right: Leah, Nicole
and Megan) entered the annual nationwide "Be Cre@tive" competition, hosted by
Film Education. Up against schools from all over
the United Kingdom, they came first place!
To enter the competition, pupils had to research, design and create an original campaign to promote legitimate film and TV content - both at home and in the cinema - and discourage illegal downloads. The campaign had to target people of their own age, and be presented in one of the following media:
A poster campaign featuring three designs, OR
a campaign of three 30-second radio commercials, OR
a 30-second filmed advert plus a ten second 'teaser' cut.
Nicole, Leah and Megan enthusiastically planned, filmed, acted in, and edited their 30-second advert.
The competition had two categories, ages 11-14 and 14-19, with a winner and runner-up in each. Pitted against
several hundred entries, the
girls took the grand prize in the 11-14 category. For themselves, they won an Apple iPad each, and for
their school they won four Apple iMac computers, a studio-quality camcorder, digital camera, and tripod, and Final Cut
editing software. Collectively, the total value of the prizes exceeds £7,000. Film Education staff kindly
visited the school on Friday 3 June, to present the prizes in person.

Pupils learn the Lambeg drum, fife, fiddle & tin whistle
|
|
This year two Ulster Scots tutors have been busy teaching their respective instruments
in our school, Portadown having quite an impact on school life.
The new Music Suite has been
reverberating to the sound of the Lambeg drum, fife, fiddle and tin whistle.
Mark Anderson is presently running classes for beginner Lambeg, advanced Lambeg and fife,
whilst Keith Lyttle has established a folk group with fiddles, tin whistles accordion,
flutes and guitar. The pupils have really enjoyed participating in the classes and without
doubt their musicality has improved as a result.
Co. Armagh is a hot bed for the Lambeg drum and it is great to see this instrument being
brought into the school curriculum. Both tutors have been helping pupils prepare for a
school concert and I know for many of the audience both groups will be a real highlight.

cancer and their families. The charity provides money for home heating, travel costs for treatment, much
needed holidays and much more. The pupils had an enjoyable time reading and at the same time raised
money for a very worthy cause. Well done to Year 8 pupils and a big thank you to all sponsors for their generous support!

Opening of the new music suite
|
|
The official opening of the D.L. Watson Music Suite took place on Tuesday 1st March,
when Mr Noel Humphries, current Chairman of the school’s Board of Governors cut the ribbon
at a short ceremony to mark the occasion. The suite, named in memory of the first principal,
represents a substantial investment by The Southern Education and Library Board and is the
latest in a number of refurbishment projects to benefit the school.
Mr Watson gave 27 years dedicated service to Clounagh and the local community and it is a
fitting tribute to his integrity, hard work and wholehearted commitment to young people
that the suite was so named. In a brief address to those present, current principal Mr
Trevor Canning, took time to reflect on the character of Mr Watson, commenting on his
determination and forward thinking, both of which remain at the heart of the school’s
ethos to this very day.
Guests, including former principals Mr Gerald Hampton and Mr Norman Dickson, Mr Gregory
Butler from the SELB, as well as representatives from architectural services, main
contractors, and several members of the Board of Governors, were invited to tour the
new building. To mark the occasion, pupils James, Amy, Jessie and Danielle presented a
short programme of music and song.
The suite includes: two fully equipped classrooms, a computer annex, three ensemble
rooms, a recording studio and dedicated storage areas. The quality of the facilities
and equipment are on a scale not dreamed of even a few years ago.
Mr Colin Slaine, Head of Music, stated that the suite was already providing young people
with the opportunity to have tuition in guitar, drum kit, singing, piano, Lambeg drums,
fife as well as the more traditional orchestral instruments of woodwind, strings and brass.
Clounagh’s musical heritage is well known, and the new suite will no doubt help to produce
a host of talented singers and musicians in the years to come. The investment is in much
more than bricks, mortar and equipment; it is an investment in young people and their
future, a fact of which Mr Watson would have been justifiably proud.
